WAUKESHA - The Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians announced that Mark Thompson, MD, was elected to serve as this year's first vice president.

The induction of officers took place at the WAFP's 64th annual meeting on Jan. 30. Thompson joins four other Wisconsin family physicians in leading the WAFP's strategic initiatives for 2013.

WAFP represents more than 2,500 dedicated family physicians, residents and medical students throughout Wisconsin. Duties of new officers and board members will include oversight of the Academy's 2013 strategic plan, focusing primarily on promoting the Patient Centered Medical Home model of health care, working to address primary care work force issues, providing unique learning and leadership opportunities for medical students and all members, and serving as the voice of reason in health care reform.

Thompson, New Glarus, serves as chief medical officer at Monroe Clinic. Prior to joining Monroe Clinic, he was the program director for the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley Family Medicine Residency Program in Appleton. He also served for four years as a military faculty member in the U.S. Air Force for the St. Louis University Family Medicine Residency.

Thompson earned his medical degree from Michigan State University, completed his residency at Midland Family Medicine Residency and a fellowship in faculty development at the University of Michigan.
