MADISON - The steady rise in unemployment has Green County's jobless rate ready to reach double figures.
The unemployment rate in Green County jumped from 9.2 percent in February to 9.8 percent in March, according to figures released Wednesday by the Department of Workforce Development. The jobless rate last month was nearly double what it was a year ago - 5 percent in March 2008.
Lafayette County's rate jumped from 8 percent in February to 8.4 percent in March. A year ago the jobless rate was 4.6 percent.
Unemployment rates are going up in just about every corner of Wisconsin. Joblessness went up in March in all 12 metropolitan areas and 64 out of 72 counties.
Statewide, the unemployment rate rose to 9.4 percent in March from 8.8 percent the month before. That's the highest rate in 26 years and amounts to about 290,000 people without jobs.
