Local jobless rates remain unchanged

MADISON - Joblessness in Green and Lafayette counties remained virtually unchanged in February, according to data released by the state Department of Workforce Development Wednesday.

The unemployment rates in Green County increased .1 percent from 9.8 percent in January to 9.9 percent in February. In Lafayette County, the jobless rate also increased .1 percent to 8.3 percent in February, which is up slightly from 8.2 percent in January. Lafayette County's unemployment rate in February was identical to the same month in 2009. Green County's February 2010 rate is .6 percent greater than the same point last year, which was 9.3 percent.

Elsewhere in Wisconsin, unemployment is up in five metropolitan areas, according to the Associated Press.

The state Department of Workforce Development on Wednesday also reported local unemployment figures for February.

Unemployment rates rose in the Eau Claire, Fond Du Lac, Oshkosh-Neenah, Racine and Wausau areas from January. Rates didn't change in the Appleton, Green Bay and Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis areas and fell slightly in the Janesville, La Crosse, Madison and Sheboygan areas.

The Janesville area had the highest unemployment rate of any metro area at 12.7 percent. Madison had the lowest at 6.7 percent.

Unemployment rose in 41 counties in February. Rusk County had the highest rate at 14.7 percent, up from 14.4 percent in January.

The non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Wisconsin was 9.7 percent in February, up from 9.6 percent in January.
