Local counties don't remove charges

MONROE - In Green and Lafayette counties, information entered into the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access website isn't removed if charges are dropped or amended, officials say.

Both Carol Thompson, Green County clerk of court, and Catherine McGowan, Lafayette County clerk of courts, said if charges against a person are dismissed, the information is added to the court record online. Thompson said anyone who looks at the public access website can see that the charges have been dismissed.

If the charges are amended, the new charges - as well as the original charges - are listed under the person's name.

Thompson said the information listed on the website is also available in the criminal complaint.

Thompson said she's not in favor of removing information when charges change. Rather, she said, it's important to read all of the information on the website to find out the status of all charges.
