Livestock carcass composting field day Aug. 8
livestock
If you have livestock, eventually you will also have deadstock to contend with. A field day on August 8 near Monticello will teach farmers how to safely compost their livestock carcasses on their farms with little extra inputs.

Monticello — On August 8, Green County Land and Water Conservation Department will be hosting a livestock carcass composting field day west of Andrew Houlberg’s farm at N4991 Spoerry Road, Monticello, Wisconsin. This field day is to showcase the process of composting and how it can be utilized as a tool to help farmers safely and legally dispose of livestock carcasses on their farm. One can also use the compost as a rich fertilizer to spread on crop fields. This process can be used as an alternative to relying on a dead truck when you have dead livestock, burying or disposing on the surface in other areas. Josh Kamps from UW Extension will be present to speak on the procedures used to be successful.

A representative from the WI DNR will talk about siting and proper placement of these composts. The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. No RSVPs are necessary. Any questions can be directed to Tonya Gratz at (608) 426-2218.
