MONROE - People who want to renew their license plates now can go to the Monroe Police Department.

The department began to issue license plate renewals Monday, Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said.

"It gives people another option," Kelley said.

Harlen Hegdal, who designs the computer programs for license plate renewals for the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), said there was an increased demand to renew license plates in Monroe. He said the key was to find a place to issue the renewals. That's when the Monroe Police Department stepped forward to help.

Kelley said people can buy their license plate renewal tags at the department from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. They can purchase the tags at the counter in the police lobby.

Kelley said his department can issue the tags for automobiles and small trucks below 8,000 pounds.

There is an $8 processing fee, Kelley said.

People must bring cash, cashier's check or money orders to renew their plates. The police department doesn't accept checks or credit cards.

Kelley said he hopes the department will be able to issue all-terrain vehicle tags and snowmobile tags in the future.

The DMV examination station at Harris Ace Hardware will continue to issue licenses.
