Library gets grant for early literacy

MONROE - The Monroe Public Library has received $7,105 in federal funds to promote early literacy in the community. The competitive grant was awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which administers the Library Services and Technology Act.

The "Grow a Reader: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten" program encourages parents to read 1,000 books with their children before the child starts kindergarten by helping to record books read and celebrate the accomplishment. Also offered is a "Little Sprouts: 100 Books Before One" program for infants.

When children register, they will receive a free library bag, along with reading records to help track books read.
