Largest tax hike in state

MONROE - Green County's 2009-10 property taxes increased more than any other county in the state, according to the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance.

The group, which conducted a study of county property taxes across the state, noted that Green County's taxes increased 11.3 percent. The next highest increase in property taxes occurred in Dane and Crawford counties, which increased by 8 percent.

In 2007-08, Green County taxes were $12.92 per $1,000 of equalized property value. That meant a person with a home valued at $150,000 paid $1,938 in taxes. In 2009-10, homeowners will pay $14.38 per $1,000. A person with a home valued at $150,000 will pay $2,157 in taxes.

Green County Finance Director Rhonda Hunter said the increase was due to the Pleasant View Nursing Home referendum, which passed in October.

Voters overwhelmingly chose to allow the county to exceed the revenue limit by up to $890,000 over the next five years to pay for operations at the county-owned nursing home.

Hunter said the county's 2010 budget increased by $819,286 because of the referendum.

The increase accounted for about 6.3 percent of the 11.3 percent increase in the county's budget, Hunter said.

"Without the referendum, the budget would have increased about 4.9 percent," she said.

A tax of 4.4 percent would have put Green County a little higher than the 4.2 percent average for the rest of the state, according to the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance.
