MONROE - Green County Land and Water Conservation Department is offering eight varieties of hardwood trees, three varieties of shrubs, and one conifer to landowners interested in planting trees in the spring of 2014.
Tree varieties include: Bur Oak, Red Oak, White Oak, Swamp White Oak, Sugar Maple, Sycamore, Shagbark Hickory and Black Cherry. Shrubs available are Wild Plum, Hazel Nut and Elderberry. The conifer is White Pine.
Trees and shrubs will be bare root and are 1- to 2-feet tall for Shagbark Hickory; 2- to 3-feet tall for the White Oak, Sugar Maple, Sycamore, White Pine, Hazelnut and Elderberry; and 3-to 4-feet tall Plum, Black Cherry, Bur, Red and Swamp White Oaks. The cost is $2 a tree with a minimum order of 10 of one species and must be ordered in increments of 10 per species.
The trees and shrubs are all native to the area. The species offered cover a broad range of soil types and moistures, from dry to very wet.
Trees can be ordered by contacting the Land and Water Conservation Department, 1627 4th Ave. West, at 608-325-4195, or by ordering through the Green County website at www.co.green.wi.gov. Orders will be taken until Thursday, Dec. 26. Trees will be delivered near the end of April.
