MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) recently announced 3,055,000 total nonfarm jobs in the state, according to June 2025 preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Preliminary employment estimates for June 2025 showed Wisconsin’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate ticked down to 3.2%, which is 0.9 percentage points below the national unemployment rate of 4.1%. The state’s labor force participation rate ticked down to 65.1% in June while the national rate decreased slightly to 62.3%, making Wisconsin’s participation rate 2.8 percentage points above the rest of the nation.
Lafayette County once again has the lowest unemployment rate across the state at just 2.3%, which is down 0.3% from both May 2025 and June 2024. Calumet County is second at 2.5%.
Green, Door, Clark, Iowa, Kewaunee and Sauk counties are all tied for third at 2.6% unemployment. Green County is also down 0.3% from last month, and sits at the same mark a year ago. Menominee County has the highest unemployment rate in the state at 5.1%.
● Place of Residence Data: Wisconsin’s unemployment rate was 3.2% in June, 0.9 percentage points below the national rate of 4.1%. Wisconsin’s labor force decreased by 5,800 over the month and 17,800 over the year. The number of people employed decreased 2,500 over the month to 3,055,800 employed, down 25,500 over the year.
● Place of Work Data: Total nonfarm jobs increased 5,500 over the month and 19,500 over the year to 3,055,000 jobs.
The DWD and BLS also estimated of employment and unemployment statistics for metropolitan areas, major cities, and counties in Wisconsin for June 2025.
In brief, the nonseasonally adjusted data for Wisconsin shows:
● Metropolitan Statistical Areas: Preliminary June 2025 unemployment rates decreased in 10 metropolitan areas over the month and stayed the same in the three remaining metropolitan areas. Rates decreased in 12 of the metropolitan areas over the year and stayed the same in one metropolitan area: Sheboygan.
● Municipalities: Preliminary June 2025 unemployment rates decreased in 24 of Wisconsin’s 35 largest cities over the month. Rates increased in six cities over the month and stayed the same in the remaining five cities. Rates decreased in 22 cities over the year. Rates increased in seven cities over the year and stayed the same in the remaining six cities.
● Counties: Preliminary June 2025 unemployment rates decreased in 63 counties over the month. Rates stayed the same in eight counties over the month and increased in one county: Menominee. Unemployment rates decreased in 61 counties over the year. Rates increased in four counties over the year and stayed the same in the remaining seven counties.
Overall, the state had a labor force participation rate of 65.1%, nearly three points higher than the U.S. rate (62.3%).
