Lafayette County Genealogical Society meeting set for Nov. 27

DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Genealogical Society's annual Fall Heritage Gathering meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 27, following a board meeting at 12:30 p.m., both at the Lafayette County Historical Society Museum, 525 N. Main St., Darlington.

Attendees should use the side entrance to the lower level. Bring a dish to pass, which may have been from an ancestor's recipe box. Place settings and beverages will be provided. Also bring 2016 genealogical success stories, family-related trips or events and/or items to share.

The society breaks for winter, but two speakers have been scheduled for 2017. Dr. Gordon E. Dammann of Lena, Illinois, will speak at 1:30 p.m. March 26 on "Frontier Medical Diseases and Treatments." Dammann was an Army post dental surgeon and captain from 1969-70 and is a retired dentist from private practice. He also is the founder of the Lena Area Historical Society and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Dammann is the author or editor of several publications of historical and Civil War subjects and events and early medical histories. He also has a long list of historical society affiliations, along with having received several awards for his active participation in numerous historical functions and events. He stays busy as a certified guide at the Antietam National Battlefield in Virginia during his summer months, along with his high-in-demand requested lectures.

Lori Bessler, reference librarian and outreach coordinator at the Wisconsin Historical Society Library archives in Madison, will speak on "How to Find Genealogical Collections" at 1:30 p.m. June 25. Bessler has worked at the library archives since 1988 and has lectured throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest on genealogical topics for more than 30 years. She also has experience researching family history for more than 40 years and specializes in locating hard-to-find resources.
