DARLINGTON - The animals, the music and the food.
The 153rd Lafayette County Fair begins Wednesday in Darlington.
Country music singer Tracy Byrd is the featured entertainer Friday. His concert begins at 8:30 p.m.
Byrd is known for such hits as "Watermelon Crawl" and "Keeper of the Stars," for which he received the Song of the Year award from the Academy of Country Music.
The Stump Fiddle Band opens for Byrd at 7:15 p.m.
On Wednesday, stock car races take place at 7 p.m. The Lafayette County Tractor Pullers open pull is 7 p.m. Thursday.
On Saturday, activities include the livestock and cheese auction at 1 p.m.; Lafayette County Tractor Pullers again hold their open pull at 1 p.m., while the Badger State Tractor Pull is at 6:30 p.m.
At 12:15 p.m. Sunday, the Rural Olympics begin. Other events Sunday include an antique tractor pull at 1 p.m. The Fairest of the Farm is crowned at 5:45 p.m.
Throughout the week rabbits, poultry, sheep, cows, swine, flowers and vegetables will be exhibited and judged as 4-H clubs vie for top honors at the fair.
But the fair is more than just competition to the dozens of young people who show how hard they've worked over the past year. It's a way to help them learn skills they can use throughout their lives.
Participation in the fair allows young people the pride and satisfaction of showing the results of their hard work.
Free grandstand seating is offered Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and gate fees for adults are $8; children ages 9 to 12 are $2, and tickets for children ages 8 and under are free. Season tickets for adults are $20 and junior season tickets for ages 13 to 16 are $15.
Friday's grandstand cost is $20.
