DARLINGTON - Although they couldn't find an actual dairy farm to host this year and high water made plans for the dairy breakfast difficult, the Lafayette County Dairy Promotion Committee wasn't going to let that stop them from holding the 32nd annual Dairy Breakfast on Saturday.

Dairy promotions committee secretary and publicity chair Kerry Gratz said the breakfast was first going to be held at the Lafayette County Fairgrounds but was changed to the Lafayette County Highway Department because of high water at the fairgrounds.

The breakfast will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. or until all are served, rain or shine. The menu will include scrambled eggs with ham and cheese, sausage links, cheese, donuts, milk, juice, coffee and strawberry sundaes. Cost for adults is $4, children under 12 are $2 and children preschool and under are free.

Since the breakfast is always the same weekend as Darlington's Canoefest, holding the event in Darlington - and now at the county shop - seemed to make sense.

"There's always people in town for (Canoefest)," she said. "We're hoping for a big crowd this year."

Canoefest committee president Marie Wamsley said she agrees it's exciting the breakfast will be held during Canoefest this year.

"It keeps people local and right in our area," she said. "It's too bad it's not on a farm this year, but we're hoping a lot of people will be around and it will have a good impact on us."

The Santa Fe band out of Dodgeville will perform country music with a hint of bluegrass. There will be the children's corner full of activities for the younger crowd. The Darlington FFA will have their petting zoo for some close contact with animals; youngsters can also have some fun with the pedal tractor pull.

The Antique John Deere Tractor Club will also have a display along with Ritchie's, Sloan Equipment and K & L Bobcat bringing in machinery. The Lafayette County Health Department will conduct blood pressure screenings and give free tetanus shots as long as they last.

The Lafayette County Land Conservation Department will also hold their award ceremony later Saturday morning. The ATV club still plans to shuttle people from the parking lot like every year.

Having the breakfast at an alternate site is a worry for Gratz, but he said it won't ruin the breakfast.

"Unfortunately there's no farm atmosphere this year," Gratz said. "But we're still having the breakfast and we hope people will come out, help the dairy industry and show their appreciation."

Gratz said anyone interested in holding next year's dairy breakfast can contact her. Although they've had a few interested people, no farm has been selected, she said.

"We want to keep these going," she said. "It's important to the community."
