DARLINGTON — The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department lost one of its own last week, as Corporal David Mullen died unexpectedly. Sheriff Reg Gill announced the news Sept. 29, saying it was “with very heavy hearts” and that Mullen would be greatly missed by the staff at the sheriff’s department.

“His 42 years of service to our community will be irreplaceable as his many years of experience and knowledge made his abilities very unique and valued,” Gill added. “As we work through the days ahead with David’s family, we will post updates as they are appropriate.”

Mullen was a 1979 graduate of Shullsburg High School. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the First Baptist Church in Darlington, with burial to follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Shullsburg. Complete arrangements are pending. The Haudenshield Funeral Home in Cuba City is assisting the family.

Word spread quickly around the region, with condolences being shared publicly by other departments.

“We extend our most heartfelt condolences to our partners to the west,” the Green County Sheriff’s Department wrote in a social media post Sept. 30. “Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, know that you have our support always, and especially in these difficult times.”

“Our condolences to the family, friends, and Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. When Dave responded to scenes he was friendly, sympathetic, and professional on all fronts. Our department will miss seeing his smiling face. RIP,” the Benton Fire Department shared.

“He was not only a phenomenal deputy but a sincerely genuine person. He was always willing to assist with any calls for service in the Benton area and always believed in solving the problem in the best way possible. He will be truly missed,” added the Benton Police Department.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out (to) Sheriff Gill, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, and the family of Corporal Mullen,” added Iowa County Sheriff Michael Peterson.
