MONROE - Green County resident Jackie Kundert is a nurse and mother who has taken her family's heartbreak and turned it into an educational foundation created to bring awareness to a growing epidemic in Wisconsin: heroin addiction.
After her son's descent into drug addiction and incarceration, Kundert learned that the heroin problem is not limited to big cities. This realization and the desire to make a positive impact on her community spurred Kundert to create FAITH (Fighting Addiction: It Takes Help), an organization that educates family members and addicts about the toll heroin has taken on the community. Through run/walk events and other fundraisers, Kundert is increasing awareness and working to decrease the stigma around drug addiction.
Walden University recently named Kundert one of five winners from across the country for its Scholars of Change video contest, which recognizes students and graduates who focus on the future, whether they are founding organizations to make changes across the globe, or working to improve the lives of their community members. Kundert's video was selected out of hundreds of submissions, and, as a winner, she received a check for $7,500 and a $2,500 donation to her organization. Earlier this month, Kundert used her winnings from Walden's Scholars of Change contest to take 2,425 students from Green County to a presentation about addiction.
