BRODHEAD - Motorists who travel on Brodhead's east side will soon have to stop for the city's first stop light.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) is expected to begin work next week to install a traffic light on Wisconsin 11 at the Wis. 104 and County T intersection. The light will make the intersection a four-way stop. Currently, only drivers on Wis. 104 and County T are required to stop at the intersection.
Brodhead Police Chief Tom Moczynski said there will be four flashing lights at the intersection. The police department will increase enforcement in the area to make sure drivers obey the lights. He said the extra patrols would be for safety reasons as well as enforcement.
"The change will most likely catch some motorists by surprise," Moczynski said. "People need to make absolutely sure oncoming traffic on Wis. 11 stops before they enter the intersection."
Brodhead Mayor Doug Pinnow said the city's public safety committee will begin to look at changing the speed limit in the area from 45 mph to 25 mph.
Traffic studies of the area concluded that a traffic light was needed. A study conducted by the DOT last year determined that about 5,800 pass through the intersection over a 12-hour period. The department determined that about 7,800 cars pass through the intersection over a 24-hour period.
Moczynski said the stop light installation should take about a week.
Work on the project was delayed last December due to the weather.
