Wednesday's Storm By The Numbers

MONROE - The roads are covered with snow and ice and it continues to snow. People want to know whether it's safe for them to travel.

There are a couple of ways to find out road conditions in Green and Lafayette counties.

People either can call the Green County Highway Department, 328-9411, or the Lafayette County Highway Department (608) 776-4919.

Green County Highway Commissioner Dallas Cecil said motorists can call the highway department during normal business hours, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. After hours, however, there isn't anyone in the office and callers will get an answering machine, he added.

"We aren't here 24 hours," he said. "I don't want people to be upset if they call at 7 p.m. and get an answering machine."

Motorists in Lafayette County also can call from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

People shouldn't contact their local sheriff's department to find out about road conditions.

A new Web site, www.511wi.gov, also provides road conditions. However, the site only offers road conditions for major highways and doesn't include highways, except U.S. Highway 151, in Green or Lafayette counties.

Some of the information provided by the site includes winter road condition reports, driving information for interstates and major highways, construction information, incident alerts and flight delay information.

There are links to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT).

The DOT site, www.dot.wisconsin.gov., provides travelers with current information about which roads are clear, slippery, snow covered or impassable.

The www.511wi.gov site also is linked to the Green County Sheriff's Department Web site, www.greensheriff.com.

People still can call (800) 762-3947 for statewide road conditions. In the near future, the phone number will be replaced with the number 511 for road conditions. It will remain toll free and will provide updates about conditions for major highways and interstates in Wisconsin.
