MONROE - A thief who sawed off and stole a buck's head earlier this week in Monroe remains at large.
The sawed-off head has also not turned up, according to Ryan Caputo, warden with the Department of Natural Resources. He's checked with all the local taxidermists, to no avail, he said. There also wasn't a trail of blood to follow or other obvious clues leading to a culprit.
"We don't have any more leads at this point," Caputo said.
The theft occurred in the 200 block of 4th Avenue, sometime between 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, and 6 a.m. the next morning.
Jameson Smith, 29, left the buck overnight in his pickup truck, parked along the street with the tailgate down, and came out Monday morning to discover the head sawed off and taken.
Caputo estimates it was a 140-class buck and relatively worthless beyond the sentimental value to Smith.
"It's a very nice buck for him," Caputo said.
Caputo doesn't suspect the theft was a prank and he's keeping the investigation open.
