BRODHEAD - A Beloit man who was flown to a Madison hospital by MedFlight after running a stop sign and colliding with another vehicle Sunday was involved in other events earlier that day now under investigation by the Brodhead Police Department.

The man suspected of causing the crash, Colton P. Van Marter, 21, was taken to the University of Wisconsin hospital. He remains in critical condition there.

According to the Green County Sheriff's Department, Van Marter was driving southbound on County T when he failed to stop at the intersection of Wisconsin 81 just before 3 p.m. An eastbound car, driven by Robin M. Smith, 52, Beloit, collided with the passenger side of his vehicle. Smith was taken by EMS to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries as a result. Smith's vehicle stopped in a nearby ditch with severe front-end damage and was towed from the scene.

The vehicle being driven by Van Marter also went off the road, colliding with a sign post and skidding another 100 feet into a nearby field. It sustained severe passenger-side damage and was also towed.

According to a press release by Brodhead Police Chief Chris Hughes, information came to light of other altercations between Van Marter and others within the city before the accident. While interviewing witnesses at the crash scene, police discovered two incidents involving Van Marter, one at the Brodhead McDonald's drive-thru and the other at a residence in the 900 block of 19th Street.

In conducting interviews, police spoke to occupants of a car behind Van Marter in the drive-thru line. The people in the vehicle said Van Marter did not move forward after placing an order even though there were no cars in front of his. The occupants of the vehicle honked to prompt movement from Van Marter, and said when he looked back at them, he displayed a knife. When paying for his food, the cashier told police Van Marter had blood on his hand.

After he left the restaurant, Van Marter became involved in an argument with his girlfriend at a Brodhead residence. Police speculated it may have been over whether he could take their child. Officers were told Van Marter threw food at another person during the disagreement.

Van Marter's girlfriend told police that Van Marter said an unidentified man had stabbed him in the McDonald's drive-thru.

Hughes said in the release that more witness interviews and "especially" the stabbing accusation required additional investigation.

Van Marter was cited by the Green County Sheriff's Office for a second-offense charge of operating a motor vehicle intoxicated causing injury, failing to stop at a stop sign, driving a vehicle with a revoked license, no insurance and failing to wear a seatbelt as a result of the later collision.

Green County Sheriff Mark Rohloff said Van Marter was previously convicted of first offense intoxicated use of a vehicle causing injury in April 2012 and was sentenced to a six-month revocation of his driver's license.
