MONROE - A Green County Jail inmate who walked away from the Monroe Clinic turned himself in Monday to the Dane County Sheriff's Department.
Johnnie N. Phiffer, 41, was jailed in Dane County on a probation hold and will be transported back to Green County, Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said.
Charges of escape have been referred to the Green County District Attorney's office, he added.
Phiffer walked away from the clinic at about 2:30 p.m. Friday, while he was at the clinic for medical treatment.
He told clinic employees he saw family members at the hospital and wanted to see them. When the clinic staff went to look for visitors, Phiffer walked out of the clinic.
Sheriff's deputies searched the area, but Phiffer wasn't found.
Roderick said he didn't know what time Phiffer turned himself in at the Dane County Sheriff's Department.
Phiffer was in jail for a 180-day sentence for a probation violation for forgery. He also is registered as a sex offender. He was convicted of third-degree sexual assault in October 1997.
