MONROE - Authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped from custody while at Monroe Clinic Friday seeking treatment.
At about 2:39 p.m., Johnnie N. Phiffer, a Huber privileged inmate from the Green County Sheriff's Department Jail walked away from custody at the emergency room, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department in a statement Saturday.
Phiffer, 41, had made claims earlier in the day of a medical need, while in jail, and needed to seek medical attention.
Phiffer was transported to the Monroe Clinic emergency room for care, and left there for treatment.
Huber privileged inmates are allowed to leave jail for work, school, medical care or work search, while unsupervised.
While at the hospital, Phiffer became persistent with hospital staff that he wanted to use the phone, but was refused as it was a restriction of the jail rules. Phiffer said he had seen relatives of his in the hospital and wanted to see them.
When the staff went to check for visitors, Phiffer quickly walked away from the exam room, wearing orange, jail-issued pants, orange plastic sandals, and a hospital gown. Phiffer was then seen exiting the hospital, according to the Sheriff's department.
The hospital staff alerted law enforcement immediately. Officers from the Monroe Police Department and Green County Sheriff's deputies responded to the area, but Phiffer was not located.
Phiffer was last seen leaving southwest from the hospital.
Phiffer was serving a 180-day sentence in the Green County jail, this was an alternative to Probation Revocation, the initial Charge was forgery-uttering. The severity of that charge was a class C Felony.
Phiffer was further required to go through alcohol and drug assessment, and sex offender treatment. Phiffer is a registered sex offender, due to a conviction of third degree sexual assault conviction in October 1997.
Phiffer is 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and weighs about 215 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Phiffer has a distinctive, recent surgical mark on the front left side of his head. At the time of the escape from authorities, he was wearing a large adhesive bandage over the mark. Stitches would be visible if the bandage was not present.
Anyone with any information about Phiffer that would lead to his apprehension may contact the Green County Sheriff's department, at the dispatch center, or Crime Stoppers.
Charges of escape against Phiffer are being referred to the Green County district attorney.
