MONROE - A McConnell, Illinois, man was charged Monday with his fifth case of driving while intoxicated after a traffic stop in Monroe on Sunday.
Kyle L. Trumpy, 24, faces a count of fifth-offense driving while intoxicated and fifth-offense driving with a prohibited blood alcohol concentration, both Class H felonies.
Trumpy was charged after he was stopped for an equipment violation while driving in the 2900 block of 13th Street in Monroe. According to a police report, Trumpy's vehicle had unreasonably loud and noxious exhaust, particularly while accelerating.
When a police officer stopped Trumpy, he reportedly saw the driver switch seats with a passenger, who then denied having done so. Trumpy, however, smelled of alcohol and had a revoked license and was subsequently arrested.
It was later determined that Trumpy had been convicted of four previous counts of driving while intoxicated since 2011. Three of these occurred in Illinois, but his fourth OWI conviction came after an incident in Green County on Dec. 09, 2012.
His previous drunk driving incidents occurred on March 28, 2011; Nov. 24, 2012; and Sept. 15, 2013.
Trumpy was also cited for driving with a revoked license and without an ignition interlock device on his vehicle.
The maximum possible sentence for Trumpy's charges is six years in prison. He will appear in court for his preliminary hearing on Dec. 28.
