DARLINGTON - An Illinois man was killed when his utility task vehicle rolled over Saturday afternoon in Fayette Township.

The accident happened at 5:24 p.m. in the 9000 block of County G, just east of the intersection of County D in Lafayette County, according to a news release from Sheriff Reg Gill. Gill's office, along with Argyle EMS and the Argyle Fire Department, responded to the report of a UTV rollover crash with injures. The Argyle Police Department also responded.

A 2015 Polaris Ranger was traveling eastbound on County G, which is an approved ATV/UTV route, when the driver failed to negotiate a curve, Gill said. The UTV left the roadway and entered the south ditch and overturned, ejecting both the driver and a passenger. Neither were wearing a seatbelt.

The driver, Joseph James Smolenski, 27, of Geneseo, Illinois, was transported from the scene by Medflight to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison where he was later pronounced dead as the result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The passenger, Colton S. Carpenter, 25, of Darlington was transported by Rural Medical Ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County and later transferred to UW Hospital.

Alcohol and speed appear to be the contributing factors leading to the crash, Gill said.

Green County EMS and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also assisted at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
