Matthew D. Schupbach, 25, Brodhead
MONROE - A Brodhead man who walked away from custody while on work release from the Green County Jail remains at large.

Matthew D. Schupbach, 25, requested to go to a local business at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday, July 13, to fill out an application for employment.

Inmates are required to call the jail when they arrive at their destination and before leaving to return to jail. Schupbach called the jail to say he was returning, but never came back.

Schupbach was serving a nine-month sentence for battery and obstructing an officer, both class A misdemeanors, at the time of the incident. He originally faced up to 18 months in jail and up to $20,000 in fines.

On Thursday he was charged with escape, a class H felony. He faces up to six years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines, if convicted.

Schupbach was the third inmate since May with Huber privileges to fail to return to the jail while on work release. The other two later were returned.
