Home invasion probed

MONROE - Two Monroe residents escaped unharmed, following a brazen home invasion and robbery just after midnight Friday on Monroe's far north side.

Police said two suspects somehow forced their way into the couple's home, 1004 2nd Street North.

The attack came when resident Gerald Nethery reportedly opened his door after waking up to the door bell ringing, according to a statement from Police Chief Fred Kelley.

The victims, Nethery, 71, and his wife Joyce, 70, called police at about 12:15 a.m. Friday to report the incident, after the intruders fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash and prescription drugs.

On Friday, a woman who identified herself as the couple's daughter, said her parents were "fine" but declined to speak publicly citing the ongoing police investigation.

Kelley said Nethery scuffled with the intruders, who overpowered him and his wife. Nethery reportedly had a minor cut on his lip, but Kelley could not verify whether it came as a result of the incident.

The men concealed their identify and were only in the home for a few minutes. They demanded and money and drugs, and then fled on foot in an unknown direction. The home, at the end of a cul de sac, remained dark during the incident, according to police.

Kelley also said Friday it appears the intruders may have specifically targeted the Nethery residence, but declined to elaborate. However, Kelley said he does not believe the general public is in danger.

But police are cautioning residents not to open their doors, especially late at night, unless the caller is known.

Monroe Police Department are asking anyone with information on the crime to call 608-329-2400, or to contact Green County Crimestoppers, by phone or text, at 1-800-422-7463 (1-800-IC CRIME).

Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
