NEW GLARUS - A new digital collection of selected New Glarus and Green County local history materials, including historical texts, is now available online.
Most of the historical materials previously had limited access for the public. The collection is now freely accessible to the general public by clicking the "Local History Digital Collection" link on the website of the New Glarus Public Library at www.newglaruspubliclibrary.org.
The digitized materials include several historical texts about the settlement and first 50 years of New Glarus; family records of the Swiss Evangelical and Reformed Church for 1850-1909 (now the Swiss United Church of Christ); a history of the church; atlases and plat books of Green County; tax assessment records of the Town of New Glarus from the 1850s and early 1900s; and a selection of historical photographs including street scenes, community events and organizations, confirmation classes, high school graduating classes, and portraits of individuals and families.
The public is invited to attend an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22 in the New Glarus Village Hall Community Room for an introduction to the collection. An overview of the collection will be given, and laptop computers will be available for individuals to explore the materials.
The digitization project was spearheaded by the New Glarus Public Library, in collaboration with the New Glarus Historical Society and the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus, and was funded by a federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant. Digitizing of the materials was handled by the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections Center, which hosts the collection as part of its State of Wisconsin digital collection.
