MONROE - Blazing temperatures are returning to the area today, July 16 and Tuesday, July 17, along with a heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service.

High temperatures are expected to reach the middle to upper 90s today, with heat indices from 98 to 103, according to the NWS.

Warm air is expected to remain in place Monday night into Tuesday, when the actual temperature could climb to 98. The heat index on Tuesday could top 100 degrees.

The heat advisory is in effect for much of the southern Wisconsin area, including Green and Lafayette counties. A heat advisory puts people, especially the young, elderly, those with health problems and those without access to air conditioning, at risk for heat-related illnesses. The NWS says pets and farm animals are also at risk, and roads may buckle from the extreme heat.

The good news is a cool front later Tuesday will bring a chance for showers or

thunderstorms; as of Sunday night, July 15, the chance for thunderstorms is 40 percent Tuesday. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is forecast for Wednesday, July 17.

Wednesday's high is expected to be 84.
