MONROE — A suggestion by Mayor Louis Armstrong may lead to a shift in polling places in November to recognize a longstanding city institution as a meeting place spanning more than a century.
Members of the Monroe Common Council voted unanimously Monday to suspend the city ordinance which states that City Hall must be the location for Monroe polls. This action could allow the polling place to be changed to Turner Hall following a public hearing Sept. 17.
The suspension of the rules does not mean that the polling place will change, but it can be shifted temporarily with a vote in September. Due to ongoing flooring issues at City Hall, citizens have been voting at the westside fire station for nearly two years. The last election held in the building was when local votes were cast in the 2016 presidential race.
Armstrong mentioned in a past meeting the change could help highlight Turner Hall as it marks its 150 years in operation as a social gathering place within the city.
