Handling of athletic funds led to leave

MONROE - The Monroe school district placed former Monroe High School Athletic Director Dave Hirsbrunner on administrative leave while it began looking into the handling of athletic program money, a separation agreement confirms.

Monroe Business Manager Ron Olson released the separation agreement between Hirsbrunner and the school district to The Monroe Times on Tuesday.

Hirsbrunner resigned Monday evening and paid the school district $6,390 by check as part of a separation agreement. District officials remain mum on why Hirsbrunner was initially suspended, but the agreement states Hirsbrunner was on paid administrative leave from his athletic director and special education teaching positions since Nov. 6 as district officials "reviewed performance issues related to the supervision of athletic program revenues."

Hirsbrunner and the school board agreed on a statement but have declined to say whether the check he wrote was for misused funds or a reimbursement of stolen funds.

"Dave Hirsbrunner, athletic director of the Monroe School District, has resigned his position effective Nov. 30," according to the statement. "He will be pursuing other interests and professional opportunities."

According to the separation agreement, Hirsbrunner and district officials agreed they would contact Green County District Attorney Gary Luhman within 10 days of the agreement.

It's still unknown if Hirsbrunner is currently being investigated for a crime.

Luhman said that although he was present at a meeting with the legal counsel for the Monroe school district and Hirsbrunner, he was not privy to the actual terms of the agreement.

"We had a meeting with the attorney for the school board and for Hirsbrunner, but I'm not privy to the terms of their agreement," Luhman said. "Generally, we don't announce investigations like this to the public.

"All I know is that he agreed to resign and pay $6,000."

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said Tuesday there is no investigation involving Hirsbrunner at this time.

"No one from the school board, no one from school staff and nobody else has brought forth a complaint to the Monroe Police Department on this matter," Kelley said. "No investigation has been or is being done."

Hirsbrunner's wife, Cory Hirsbrunner, is the superintendent of the Monroe School District.

Jon Anderson, the district's attorney from Godfrey & Kahn of Madison, said Cory Hirsbrunner was insulated and played no role in the review of Dave Hirsbrunner's administrative leave and resignation agreement.

Dave Hirsbrunner is prohibited from working in the school district again, according to the agreement. Hirsbrunner agreed that he would be barred from applying for a district teaching, coaching or volunteer position.

The agreement also stipulates that school board members are barred from discussing the circumstances that led to Hirsbrunner's resignation.

Hirsbrunner was set to make $76,959 this year for his duties as athletic director and as a special education teacher. He was paid, including all fringe benefits, through Nov. 30 when he resigned.

According to the separation agreement, Hirsbrunner will not receive any additional pay for vacation or sick days or other fringe benefits after his resignation. The resignation will be put into his personnel file, but the separation agreement with the district will not be placed in the file.

Hirsbrunner has not returned multiple phone messages requesting a comment.
