MONROE - Construction on the downtown Square streetscape will be turning a corner this week, and the public is being advised to stay back.

At least two people have put themselves in danger by entering blocked construction zones, according to Monroe Main Street Director Barb Nelson.

"Streets and intersections are blocked for good reason. Areas where construction equipment is in use should never be entered," said she said.

Streetscape contractors met with members of Monroe Main Street and downtown block captains Friday to update them on the construction procedures on the Square this week.

Starting today, a second E & N Hughes Company construction crew will be working at the corner of 16th Avenue and 12th Street. The extra crew will be making its way north, connecting 16th Avenue area to a new water line; 12th Street will remain open during this process.

E & N Hughes Company, Inc., Monroe, is the general contractor hired by the city for the project.

The first E & N construction crew will continue working south on 16th Avenue from the 10th Street.

The two crews hope to meet by mid-week at the 11th Street and 16th Avenue intersection, which will be closed.

Access to the Square will be available by using 17th Avenue from the south, and 10th Street from the east.

Pedestrians are strongly advised to use the sidewalks and walking areas that are maintained, and cross at intersections where construction crews are not actively engaged.

Market on the Square will relocate to an area behind the Middle School at 15th Street and 16th Avenue, Wednesday, while the work continues on 16th Avenue.
