MONROE — The School District of Monroe will celebrate the beginning of construction for the new Monroe High School at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the site of the new high school, located east of 31st Avenue, north of 13th Street, and south of 8 ½ Street. Parking is available, and attendees should follow the signs directing traffic.

The groundbreaking ceremony is open to members of the community, school alumni, city officials, representatives from the district, Board of Education, local subcontractors, and the district’s architectural and construction partners.

Voters went to the polls in Nov. 2022 and approved an $88 million referendum to fund a new high school with the acquisition of land; a performing arts center; site improvements; enabled the sale of the current high school and site; capital maintenance and mechanical system improvements at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School; and acquisition of furnishings, fixtures, and equipment. Construction is expected to last for two years.

The Board of Education considered multiple locations for the school, including the existing high school site, eventually deciding the best and most cost-effective option was to build on farmland on the east side of Monroe. This is also known to the community as the B&S Property.

“It is exciting to start construction of the new high school since the initial planning process began in 2017,” said Rodney Figueroa, District Administrator. “I am so thankful to the Monroe community for their support of the school district, staff, and students. Offering new modern learning environments will result in increased student and staff engagement, stronger relationships between teachers and students, all while ensuring a safe and secure atmosphere for students to learn.”
