MONROE - The Monroe Arts Center Board of Directors and the Monroe Arts Center Foundation Board of Directors announced the start of construction of the Monroe Arts Center's building addition.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. July 21 at the construction site on the grounds of the Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St. The event is open to the public.
The new addition will be connected by a glass walkway to the current facility, the neo-Gothic style Methodist Church built almost 150 years ago. The new two-story addition - that includes a full basement - will be fully accessible and provide complete access to the lower level and the upper-level concert hall of the church. There will be an easy pick-up and drop- off entrance equipped with an elevator. It will also provide restrooms, a promenade/lobby, gathering space and space for concessions.
The large addition will provide a fine arts gallery, a second smaller gallery and a children's art gallery on the second floor. There will be art classrooms for children and adults and a gift shop that will sell the work of local artists. Administrative offices will move into the new building, making way for the restoration of the lower level of the church, the next planned phase of the overall project.
The Kubala Washatko Architects of Cedarburg designed the new building.
