MONROE - The Green County Sheriff's Department is planning to replace the county's 911 calling system.
The current 911 system is provided by TDS Telecom, but Sheriff Mark Rohloff said the company will no longer provide maintenance for the system's infrastructure.
"There's a lot of connectivity now that the county is responsible for," Rohloff said. This includes a substantial amount of outdated software that is no longer supported and needs to be replaced.
Rohloff said installing a new system from AT&T will cost $182,000. The city of Monroe will assume a $30,000 share of the cost.
TDS Telecom provides 911 service to three other Wisconsin counties, Rohloff said. These counties - Grant, Clark and Taylor - are also planning to update their 911 systems.
A county board meeting on Tuesday approved transferring the appropriate funds from the board's general fund to the sheriff administration account.
Rohloff said the new system will not be functionally different from the current one and should be completed within three months.
