Green County pursuing AmeriCorps volunteer

MONROE - The committee that oversees public safety in Green County has approved application for a grant for a part-time AmeriCorps volunteer to work in emergency management here.

The Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee decided to move forward on the grant at its monthly meeting Monday, Aug. 12.

The 900-hour position focuses on volunteer outreach and coordination, as well as disaster preparedness. If Green County is awarded the position, the AmeriCorps member would receive a $6,000 living allowance and an education award upon successfully completing the year-long term. Both expenses are covered by the state.

In other business at the meeting:

- Sheriff Jeff Skatrud reported that the jail population is on the rise, partly due to a lot of people getting picked up on probation holds in July. The daily average jail population in July was 55, up from 48 in June. Ten inmates on average were out working in July, and three were serving their sentences on electronic monitoring.

- One jail inmate required on-duty guarding while in a Madison hospital for three days in July receiving medical treatment, Skatrud said. The inmate was not in for a violent crime, but protocol requires a jail deputy to sit in the hospital room with the inmate at all times.

- Committee members approved a proposal to make wage changes to positions within the sheriff's department. The chief deputy and three lieutenants would be switched to salaried positions, instead of hourly. The move is part of an effort to make more county positions salaried and is pending approval from the full county board.

- Skatrud's retirement from the sheriff's department, after more than three decades of service, is effective Sept. 2. He bid the committee farewell, saying, "It's been my pleasure, and I'll miss you all."
