MONROE - A recent Madison Area Technical College graduate from Juda is this year's winner of the logo design for the Monroe Balloon Rally.

McKenzie Dunwiddie, 22, submitted the winning design for the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry Balloon Rally pin and T-shirt logo contest.

"When I found out I won, I was shocked," Dunwiddie said. "I was like 'I won?'"

Dunwiddie graduated from MATC in December with a degree in graphic design. Her grandmother told her about the contest. Dunwiddie had never entered a logo contest before.

Dunwiddie created the logo on the computer using Adobe Illustrator. She wanted a circular, round logo that "all flowed together." She had seen logos of the past few years and wanted to do something different.

Patty James, executive director of the chamber, said judges liked the unique design, balance and simplicity of Dunwiddie's logo.

"This feels wonderful," Dunwiddie said.

Dunwiddie plans to use the contest title on her resume, as she's searching for a full-time job in graphic design.

Pins and T-shirts featuring Dunwiddie's design will begin to appear in Monroe businesses by mid-May.

This year, the chamber also is starting an "Instant Win Pin" event. Pins will be sold for $3 each and will be used as admittance into the rally event at the Green County Fairgrounds June 13-15.

Each pin envelope will contain an instant win coupon good toward a discount or free item from participating businesses.
