MONROE - Monroe Municipal Airport will start its 2009 runway seal coat project with an $80,000 grant from the state.

Governor Jim Doyle released the state funds, after approving Monroe's $100,000 project to crackseal and sealcoat the airport's main runway pavement.

The City of Monroe is contributing the remaining $20,000.

Airport Manager Kelly Finkenbinder was pleased to receive the grant, which will extend the life of the runways, he said

Runway 1230, the airport's 5,100-feet main runway, was in need of rejuvenation, he said.

"Crack sealing wasn't enough anymore, to make it smooth enough for takeoffs and landings," he said.

Monroe Municipal Airport handles about 6,000 take-offs and landings a year.

"After this is done, we will continue regular maintenance with cracksealing," Finkenbinder said.

The project will help prevent water infiltration and minimize oxidation effects, which cause pavement deterioration, according to Michael Gabor, project manager with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The project will start with a crackseal, followed by a asphalt slurry seal and remarking.

Finkenbinder said Fahrner Asphalt Sealers Inc. of Plover, Wisconsin, has already begun hauling materials to the airport.

Fahrner is coordinating five airport projects under a state contracted package.

The state put the airport's requests under one contract to save money, Finkenbinder said .

Work on the Monroe runway is scheduled to begin in about three to five weeks and should be completed by the end of summer.

Rep. Brett Davis (R-Oregon) announced the grant release Wednesday.

"This project is designed to conduct needed maintenance that will extend the life of the runway. By ensuring our area's transportation network is properly maintained, we will help promote economic development," he said.
