MONROE - The 13th annual Gavin Breadon Memorial Swim Meet will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Recreation Park swimming pool.
The swim meet is a non-competitive event, with concessions and activities starting with the National Anthem at 10 a.m. and the presentation of scholarships to this year's Monroe High School seniors.
There will also be a annual silent auction of hand-blown glass pieces made exclusively for the event by Gavin's brother, Eoin Breadon, an internationally-recognized artist and assistant professor of sculpture at University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Proceeds from the event will provide scholarships to MHS graduating seniors, and athletic scholarships to younger students, as it has done since 2003.
Gavin Breadon was a 1991 graduate of MHS, and a 1996 graduate of Central College, Pella, Iowa. He was a postgraduate student at the medical school at University College, Dublin, Ireland when he died suddenly at the start of his senior year in October 2002. He was involved in multiple sports in high school, college, and in postgraduate school. He was a swimmer, lifeguard, swim instructor and coach of the Monroe Area Swim Team; he also founded the Mat Rats wrestling program.
The glass pieces will be available for bid both online this week or by visiting the home of Dr. George and Gabrielle Breadon, Gavin's parents, at 2021 11th St. For more information, call 608-328-4817.
