MONROE - There's no hitch in Jim Lowery's giddyup.
Lowery, Deerfield, took part in the horse pull Friday at the Green County Fairgrounds.
It's not as easy as he makes it looks. The team of horses are hitched together and hooked up to a truck filled with weight. The horses must pull the truck more than 27 feet to advance to the next level.
Lowery has been competing in horse pulling for 23 years. For him, the horses make it fun.
"I love the horses," he said. "I have as much fun working with them at home as I do at the competitions."
Getting ready for the event is a year-round exercise, he said. The horses learn what they need to do. They seem to love the competitions as much as the owners, Lowery said.
Lowery and others who bring their teams to county fairs and other competitions train their horses with weights. They need to see how much the horses can pull, and they also need to find out which teams work the best together. The horses have to pull to pull together at the same time.
"I've put a lot of horses together to get the right combination," he said.
