MONTICELLO - Gempeler's Supermarket in Monticello received four awards In the Meat Product Competition at the 77th annual convention of the Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors held in Madison April 1-3.
It won the Grand Champion award in the ring liver sausage category. In the Fresh Breakfast Sausage Links category, its Southern Style Pork Links received the Reserve Grand Champion award. In the cooked traditional bratwurst category, its Alpine Boy Wisconsin Style Bratwurst earned Reserve Grand Champion, and its Whole Smoked Turkey received the Champion award in the cured and smoked poultry category. The WAMP Meat Product Competition is the largest of its kind in the United States.
This year, meat markets and processing plants from throughout the state entered more than 1,000 individual products into 36 judging categories, including summer sausage, bratwurst, ham, bacon, smoked poultry and others. On April 2, more than 40 judges including food scientists, out-of-state meat processors and other food industry professionals, evaluated the entries, using a scale of 1,000 points. Products were scored for external appearance and eye appeal, internal appearance, aroma and taste.
