Gassman honored as EMR of the Year for Wisconsin Assembly District 50

MADISON — The City of Monroe Fire Department announced this week that Cheryl Gassman, a dedicated Emergency Medical Responder with the department, was honored on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison as the Emergency Medical Responder of the Year for Wisconsin Assembly District 50.

The annual First Responder of the Year celebration recognizes first responders from across Wisconsin who demonstrate exceptional dedication, compassion, and service to their communities. Gassman was joined by Fire Chief Alan Rufer and her family as she was recognized on the Assembly floor.

“It was a privilege to welcome and celebrate Cheryl’s accomplishments and dedication with her children during the State Assembly’s First Responder of the Year celebration this week, where First Responders from across the state were honored for their commitment to our communities,” said Rep. Jenna Jacobson (D-Oregon). “It has been my privilege to have Cheryl Gassman of the City of Monroe Fire Department to be honored by the State Assembly as the First Responder of the Year from the 50th Assembly District. After reaching out to police, fire, and EMS departments throughout the district, Cheryl stood out for her dedication to responding to emergencies and service to our community.”

Jacobson represents the 50th Assembly District which encompasses Green County and parts of Dane and Rock Counties. 

“I would also like to thank Monroe Fire Chief Alan Rufer for nominating Cheryl and attending the ceremony this week. When you see our First Responders out in our communities, please remember their commitment to ensuring our safety and well-being. Once again, congratulations to Cheryl and her family.”

In 2024, Gassman responded to 63% of all department calls, and as of August of this year, she has responded to 61% of calls to the department. 

“This dedication embodies her commitment to answer the call no matter the hour or circumstance and ensures that when someone dials 911, a skilled and compassionate professional will be there to help,” Jacobson said. “Cheryl’s impact in our community goes beyond responding to emergencies.”

Jacobson said Gassman She launched new educational programs aimed at reducing lift assists among the elderly population. She is a certified CPR, Hands-Only CPR, and Stop the Bleed Instructor, teaching critical lifesaving skills to individuals and groups throughout the area.

“These skills ensure other citizens are able to act in those critical moments before emergency responders arrive” Jacobson added.

Rufer said that Gassman’s compassion and dedication to the people of Monroe exemplify what it means to be a first responder. 

“We are incredibly proud to see her receive this honor,” Rufer said in a statement. “She represents the very best of our department, and her example inspires many — both within our department and throughout the broader community.”

Rufer and the Monroe Fire Department extended “heartfelt congratulations to Cheryl on this outstanding achievement. Her recognition is not only a personal honor but also a reflection of the strength, commitment, and heart of all of our members.”

“Her acknowledgment of Cheryl’s service helps highlight the vital role our emergency responders play in keeping Wisconsin communities safe,” Rufer added.
