MONROE - Six homes were evacuated Monday afternoon, after construction crews hit a gas line at the intersection of 13 Avenue and 9th Street.
Workers from Westphal and Company, Inc. were digging at about 12:20 p.m.on Monday to put in signal bases when a rock apparently hit the gas line, causing the rupture, authorities said.
The six nearby houses were evacuated until the gas line was shut off at about 12:55 p.m.
Residents were able to return home after about an hour.
Monroe Fire Department officials said that contractors do not normally turn off the gas when doing road construction, as they were Monday.
We Energies declined to immediately comment at the scene of the leak.
Gas was turned back on at about 3:30 p.m. Monday for the residents who were impacted and repairs were complete, said Brian Mathery, a We Energies media spokesman.
