ALBANY - An Albany group interested in planting a community garden will break ground on the project Saturday, Oct. 6.

A group interested in starting a garden to provide fresh produce for the Albany Food Pantry formed in February. Members included representatives of the Albany School District, Albany United Methodist Church, Albany Lutheran Church and individuals.

The project expanded during follow-up meetings to include supplying fresh produce for the Albany School lunch program, developing a nutritious food education program at the school, participating in Green County programs and starting an Albany area farmers market.

The project has since attracted project partners including Green County Health Department, Monroe Clinic, Healthy Kids/Healthy County, Blackhawk Technical College, University of Wisconsin-Extension, village of Albany, South West Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission and SWCAP. All of these organizations are involved in developing healthy food programs and food education programs for Green County residents.

The project was renamed to the Albany Sustainable Food Education Center because of the expanded role into education for the entire county. It will be a volunteer organization with open membership.

The Albany School District is providing approximately 20,000 square feet in the area west of the tennis courts along Summit Avenue for the project.

Planting is scheduled for next spring. More information on the groundbreaking and the project will be available as plans are finalized.

The planning committee has a wish list that includes power and manual equipment and structures. A fundraising program is being planned to raise funds for the garden program and to accept equipment donations.
