MONROE - For 10 years the Apostolate to the Handicapped held its annual volleyball tournament and silent auction at the Junction House west of Monroe.
A fire last year that destroyed the bar ended the annual tradition, but it couldn't stop the Apostolate from an annual fundraiser.
This year, during the Apostolate to the Handicapped's golf outing, some people came up with a new idea for a fundraiser.
Apostolate secretary Ellen Marti said Ron and Steve Buholzer, Jeff Wideman, Jeff Conway and Steve Stettler discussed the possibility of a fundraiser; before they finished golfing they came up with an event, date and time.
The fundraiser is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Old Smokey's, 1301 17th St., Monroe.
Marti said the menu for the event includes steak sandwiches and sweet corn.
There's also a little extra.
"We're going to have world championship cheese for people to sample," Marti said.
Foreign Type Cheesemakers and the Wisconsin Cheesemaker Association will donate cheese, Marti said.
In addition, there will be a silent auction.
The money raised from the event will be put toward the Apostolate's Wisconsin Dells trip Aug. 22 and the annual Apostolate to the Handicapped Christmas dinner, scheduled for Dec. 6.
