MONROE - Have you ever known someone who touched every part of your life, or have you loved someone across time and distance?

"Love Letters," a touching two-person play starring Doug and Kelley Munda of Freeport will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St.. The special performance is a fundraiser and collaboration between Monroe Arts Center, Monroe Theatre Guild and Winneshiek Theatre in Freeport as an ongoing effort to support the area arts.

"Love Letters" is a critically acclaimed Broadway play by playwright A.R. Gurney. It is told through a lifetime of correspondence between Andrew and Melissa: two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments through letters to one another.

Both born to wealth and position, straight-arrow Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (Doug Munda) and rebellious Melissa Gardner's lifelong communication of letters begin with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Despite leading separate lives, the couple (played by the Mundas) can't let go of each other and maintain a 50-year correspondence. The letters reveal how much they really mean to each other and how much they give and receive - physically apart but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be. But long after the letters are done, the real question remains: Have they made the right choices or is the love of their life only a letter away?

Doug Munda has been involved in theater his entire life and has performed in or directed numerous shows including "The King and I," "Deathtrap" and "Of Mice and Men." He is a board member at Winneshiek Theatre and for the past several years has been the auctioneer for Monroe Arts Center's "A Taste of Spring." He is the owner of Munda Auctions in Freeport.

Kelley Munda has had a lifelong love of the performing arts. She studied classical ballet at a young age and has danced with the Pennsylvania and Milwaukee Ballet and with Northern Illinois University during her undergraduate studies. Previous stage work has included roles in "The Fantasticks" and "The Vagina Monologues."
