JANESVILLE - The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin is celebrating its 25th anniversary of matching personal philanthropy of donors to community needs. An anniversary celebration and welcome reception for the Foundation's newly hired president/CEO, Wyatt Jackson, is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. March 21 at Rotary Botanical Gardens.
The reception also will welcome the Foundation's recently hired President/CEO, Wyatt Jackson. Jackson comes to the Foundation from the Community Foundation of Crawford County in southern Indiana, where he served as the programs and operations manager. He begins his new position March 15.
As a national accredited foundation, CFSW has been a community resource for area non-profit organizations, schools and students since Janesville resident, Alan Dunwiddie, approached colleagues in 1992 with the idea of creating never-ending charitable support for the local community.
Originally called the United Community Foundation, it began with one fund totaling $5,000 and within six months assets increased to more than $300,000.
Its name changed to the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin in 1994 to better reflect the geographical area it was serving.
Since then, the foundation and the number of funds, grants and scholarships it manages has grown: The foundation now manages more than $50 million in assets and 629 funds benefiting a variety of causes including health and human services, community enhancement, youth, arts, education, environment and more.
In 2017, it awarded 765 grants to local nonprofit organizations and schools, and more than 542 scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary education beyond high school.
Since its founding the Community Foundation has given back more than $45 million to community projects throughout its region. A 501(c)(3) charitable organization, the CFSW serves nine southern Wisconsin counties, including Rock, Walworth, Crawford, Iowa, Lafayette, Green, Grant, Sauk and Vernon.
