MONROE - Monroe Clinic, UW-Extension and Green County United Prevention Professionals for Youth will present a forum on healthy, mindful living and understanding depression on Friday, May 18 at the Monroe United Methodist Church, 2227 4th St.
The free event includes a sandwich and salad lunch at noon. Speakers will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Dr. Lori Phelps, Monroe Clinic psychologist, will speak on what depression is and what it looks and feels like. She will discuss ways to improve depression through exercise and diet, as well as kinds of treatments that are effective. Phelps will highlight mindfulness therapy as a new and effective treatment.
Roger Williams will speak on "Combating Farm Stress: What's Needed Beyond Grit?" He will discuss factors that put farmers at risk for experiencing distress and the specific strategies that can be used to combat or overcome farm stress.
Dorothy Carskadon, a therapist from the Madison Vet Center, will speak on veterans and their families; the issues vets face; and resources available to help both vets who have recently returned home and older individuals.
The final speaker, Shel Gross from Mental Health America of Wisconsin, will train people in the technique of "QPR" - Question, Persuade, Refer: Suicide Prevention (Gatekeeper) training. A gatekeeper is someone trained to recognize a suicide crisis and, because of their training, know how and where to find help. Gatekeepers are given information that is reinforced by a QPR booklet and card complete with warning signs, methods to encourage a person to get help and a list of resources available.
Professionals can receive four continuing education hours. The organizations are asking those who plan to attend to RSVP by calling the Green County UW-Extension office at (608) 328-9440 by Tuesday, May 15.
