MONROE - A former pharmacy manager at Monroe's Walmart faces felony charges that he embezzled more than $15,000 from the superstore while employed there in 2009 and 2010.
Jeff M. Stauffacher, 38, Mineral Point, falsified refunds and insurance bills to steal the money, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday, June 25, in Green County Circuit Court.
Stauffacher admitted to the offenses in a signed statement dated April 22, 2010, and filed with the complaint.
"I have taken approx. $20,000 over the course of the last couple of years," he wrote, going on to explain that the embezzlement started when he took refunds customers did not pick up and it "then escalated to larger monies."
He billed insurance companies for medications customers never picked up and pocketed the money, according to his statement.
He apologizes for the embezzlement in the statement and says he "will make amends to Walmart however they see fit."
The complaint against Stauffacher calculates a total theft of $15,006 between Dec. 18, 2009 and April 19, 2010 from the store, 300 W. 6th Ave. It also alleges he used a fellow pharmacist's employee ID, without her permission, to create eight falsified prescription refunds totaling $1,325.
Stauffacher faces a Class G felony charge of stealing more than $10,000 in a busines setting and a Class H felony charge of misappropriating ID information. If convicted, he could be sentenced up to 16 years in prison and fined $35,000.
He has an initial appearance in court scheduled July 23 before Judge Thomas Vale.
