Former NG man gets probation for fake checks

MONROE - A former New Glarus man was sentenced last month in Green County Circuit Court to two years on probation in a felony fraud case against the Bank of New Glarus.

Jamari M. Caffrey, 20, now of Calumet City, Illinois, pleaded no contest Feb. 20 to a Class H felony charge of fraud against a financial institution. A second count was dismissed as part of a plea deal.

If he complies with his probation conditions, he is eligible to have the conviction expunged from his record under a state law that grants leniency to young offenders.

The case stems from counterfeit checks, doctored to look as if issued by a Pizza Hut payroll company in Texas, that Caffrey deposited in the Bank of New Glarus using his mobile phone in January 2017, according to court records. He then withdrew cash in the amount of the checks from his account, ultimately defrauding the bank out of $2,700.

He tried several days later to deposit four similar checks totaling $3,200, but the bank rejected those checks. An investigating officer noted the checks originated from what seemed to be "a huge fraud network."

Caffrey paid $500 to the bank at his sentencing, with the balance of restitution due as a condition of his probation.
