MONROE - Friends and family are coming together to help a family mourning the loss of a loved one and the hardship of a damaged home.
Jeffrey R. Sullivan, 37, died at Monroe Clinic on Sunday after being rescued from the family's burning home at 2415 16th St. early Sunday morning.
A daughter, Julia Sullivan, 16, suffered burns over half her body and is being treated at University of Wisconsin Hospital. Jeff's wife, Ruth, 35, and other children, David, 13 and Levi, 12, were not injured in the fire.
Sullivan worked at Pizza Hut for 19 years before recently working as an area supervisor for McDonald's in Monroe, Brodhead, Evansville, Darlington and Stockton, Ill.
"We were like a second family to Jeff," assistant manager Linda Burkhalter said. "He got to know all of us on a personal level, and he was a friend."
To help the family, Pizza Hut employees have placed donation boxes at Kwik Trip, Stop 'N' Go, Subway, Juda Oasis, Garden Deli and Suisse Haus.
Burkhalter said the owners of Pizza Hut in Monroe may pay for the memorial lunch for Sullivan. She said the store also may host a spaghetti supper fundraiser for the family in about a month.
It's the least his former employees, and friends, could do, Burkhalter said.
"He was always happy, funny and had a great sense of humor," Burkhalter said. "He was caring and loving, and always gave us a hug when we were down."
