NEW GLARUS - It was hard to walk through New Glarus Saturday and not feel hungry.
The annual Taste of New Glarus and Heidi Festival featured food, music, arts and crafts ... and more food.
New Glarus restaurants and stores filled the downtown with goodies. The entire downtown was a large kitchen, as people cooked and others ate.
Jaime Sullivan and her daughter, Jazmine Perkins, 9, both from Blanchardville, attended their first Taste of New Glarus on Saturday. They enjoyed some local fare at the park after visiting the arts and crafts fair.
What appealed to them most was the variety of crafts available.
"They have so many different types of crafts," Sullivan said.
A couple dozen vendors sold, among other things, lawn ornaments, pictures, clothing, jellies and jams and jewelry.
Al and Dorothy Heil, Owatonna, Minn., have been to Taste of New Glarus four times in the past 20 years; they said there is something special about the event.
"We love the Swiss music and the food," Al said. "The people here are so friendly; we feel like we're part of the family."
For the Heils, the 275-mile trip from their home to New Glarus doesn't seem that far.
"It's worth the trip," Al said.
In addition to the Taste of New Glarus and craft show, people were able to enjoy the "Heidi" play at New Glarus High School.
Ethnic Swiss and other European music also was featured at the high school Saturday, along with a street dance.
